On April 1, 1982, militants of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso entered the Astanya hacienda in Vilcashuamán. During the raid, the Shining Path members looted the hacienda and took food supplies. This attack was part of a broader PCP-SL strategy aimed at attacking the "symbols of gamonalismo" in the area, complementing their military objectives against police posts. Days earlier, on March 26, 1982, PCP-SL militants had again raided the Ayzarca farm, confronting six policemen and assassinating the new farm administrator, Andres Gutierrez.
