Attack on Ayacucho prison

PCP-SL attacks Ayacucho prison and frees 247 inmates

On March 2, 1982, a Shining Path commando attacked the Ayacucho prison, freeing 247 inmates. This event had an impact on the community of Huamanga, since it was a demonstration of political and military strength of the PCP-SL over the state representatives. This fact undoubtedly increased the initial sympathy of a sector that saw in the PCP-SL the answer to the abandonment that Ayacucho was experiencing.
