PCP-SL assault on Huamanga CRAS: 247 inmates escaped, 2 policemen killed
Assault by the PCP-SL on the Center for Reclusion and Social Adaptation (CRAS) of Huamanga. A group of approximately 100 subversives attacked the prison. A total of 247 inmates escaped, of which at least 50 were sentenced or being prosecuted for alleged terrorism. The assault left two policemen dead: Florencio Aronés Guillén and José Rea Conde. Only seven police officers were guarding the facilities despite prior intelligence warnings. After the assault, Republican guards shot Carlos Alcántara Chávez, Russell Wensjoe and Vicente Amilcar Urbay Ovalle to death at the hospital.
