Assault on the CRAS jail in Huamanga

Shining Path PCP assault on the CRAS prison in Huamanga in March 1982, which resulted in the escape of prisoners and was one of the most impactful events of the initial period of the internal armed conflict.

The Shining Path PCP carried out an assault on the CRAS prison (Centro de Readaptación Social) of Huamanga in March 1982, managing to escape prisoners. This was one of the events of greatest impact during the initial period of the internal armed conflict, together with the assaults on police posts that forced the rapid withdrawal of police forces from the rural areas of Ayacucho. Subsequently, three members of the PCP-SL who were recaptured after this escape were murdered in the Ayacucho general hospital, which generated rejection against the forces of law and order and heightened tensions in the region.
