In January 1982, the Shining Path PCP carried out an assault on the San José police post. After the attack, columns of PCP-SL members fled to Uchuraccay to hide and later dispersed to various localities. The attackers arrived in Uchuraccay where they even danced in front of the town's cemetery before separating. This assault was part of Shining Path's II Military Plan aimed at "developing guerrilla warfare" and showed the weakness of the police posts in the area.
