In 1982, the subversive commanders of the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) in the Chapi sector began efforts to expand their area of influence in the so-called liberated zones, making contact with other towns in the region. As part of this expansion, the PCP-SL entered the community of Chapi in 1982 and burned a cañazo factory, demonstrating their presence and control in the area. This action was part of the PCP-SL's broader strategy to establish support bases and territorially expand its influence in the department of Ayacucho during the period of the internal armed conflict.
