On December 8, 1981, militants of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the police post in the district of Colcabamba in the province of Tayacaja. This attack was part of the first armed actions of the PCP-SL in the region, as part of its strategy to put an end to the "old order" and force the incorporation of the "peasant masses" into the war. The attack on the police post was one of the initial actions aimed at eliminating the presence of the State in rural areas. By the end of 1982, as a result of these actions, there was no authority whatsoever in numerous districts of Tayacaja and Churcampa.
