In September 1981, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso launched a bomb against the headquarters of the Prelature of Juli. This attack occurred one month after the attack on the Palermo Rural Institute of the Maryknoll Fathers, near Juli, in August 1981. Both assaults provoked a strong wave of indignation among the local population. Several thousand peasants participated in a march of atonement in rejection of these attacks against Church institutions. These attacks were part of the initial strategy of the PCP-SL against the Church, although after experiencing popular rejection, the group modified its tactics of frontal attacks against religious institutions in the region.
