Attack on the Palermo Rural Institute
PCP-Sendero Luminoso attack against the Palermo Rural Institute of the Maryknoll Fathers near Juli in August 1981, followed by a bomb attack against the Prelature of Juli. Both attacks generated a strong reaction of popular rejection and thousands of peasants marched in protest.
The PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the Palermo Rural Institute, administered by the Maryknoll Fathers, near Juli in August 1981. A month after the attack on the institute, they threw a bomb against the headquarters of the Juli Prelature. Both assaults provoked a strong reaction of rejection from the local population, with several thousand peasants participating in a march of atonement. This attack was part of the initial strategy of the PCP-SL against Church institutions, although after experiencing popular rejection, the group temporarily modified its tactic of frontal attacks against the Church.
