On April 21, 1981, there was an attack against the police post of Luricocha, in the province of Huanta, Ayacucho. This attack was part of a series of actions by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso against police posts during 1981. It was one of the first significant attacks against police installations in the area, preceding the more shocking attack in Tambo on October 11 of the same year. These attacks against the police were part of the PCP-SL's initial strategy to generate a power vacuum in the countryside and create favorable conditions to establish its support bases.
