On January 24, 1981, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out a harassment attack against the 27 de Noviembre barracks located in the city of Cuzco. This attack was part of the initial period of violence (1980-1983) in the Southern Andes, characterized by propaganda actions and bombings against various public and private institutions. During this early stage of the internal armed conflict, subversive actions in Cuzco functioned as a sounding board for the actions of the PCP-SL, including sabotage of the southern train lines. The attack on the barracks was one of the first acts of direct harassment against military installations in the Cuzco region.
