First incursions in Vilcas river districts

Beginning in 1981, the districts along the Vilcas River began to receive visits from PCP-SL militants, intensifying in 1982 with raids and takeovers of villages directed against local authorities.

Since 1981, the districts of Manta, Moya, Vilca, Acobambilla and Huayllahuara, located along the Vilcas River, began to be visited by the subversives of the PCP-SL. In 1982, the first incursions and "town seizures" took place, attacking especially the representatives of the "old power", i.e. mayors, lieutenant governors and justices of the peace. The Vilca basin, divided into the districts of Moya, Manta and Vilca, concentrated the highest rate of violence in the province. On July 11, 1982, a group of subversives took over the town of Ñuñungayo, in Vilca, assaulting the communal store.
