In 1981, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso caused an explosion in the cloistered Carmelite Convent in Ayacucho. This attack was part of the first attacks by the subversive group against religious institutions in the region. The population strongly rejected this violent act against the cloistered nuns. Due to the strong negative reaction of the Ayacucho population, Shining Path did not attack the Church in Ayacucho again during this initial period of the conflict.
