On December 24, 1980, between 200 and 300 peasants were gathered by the PCP-SL commando in the neighboring community of Pujas to assault the Ayzarca hacienda during the night. During the assault, they killed Benigno Medina, the hacienda owner, and his butler. This was one of the first attacks by the PCP-SL against the 'symbols of gamonalismo' in the area. On March 26, 1982, PCP-SL militants raided the Ayzarca farm again, confronting the six policemen in charge of surveillance and assassinating Andrés Gutiérrez, the new administrator of the farm.
