March of settlers to Congress

Ten thousand residents of San Juan de Lurigancho marched to Congress in October 1980 demanding a solution to the water and sewage problem. Although they succeeded in requesting an Emergency Plan for Canto Grande, the measures were not implemented, which led to new mobilizations.

In October 1980, ten thousand residents of 10 young towns of San Juan de Lurigancho marched to the Congress of the Republic, demanding a solution to the water and sewage problem. The demonstrators succeeded in getting the senators to request an "Emergency Plan" for Canto Grande. However, since the promised measures were not carried out, the inhabitants resorted to new mobilizations, the largest being the one that gathered approximately 20,000 inhabitants in February 1981. This mobilization took place in a context of high economic precariousness and political predominance of leftist parties in the district.
