Murder of landowner Benigno Medina
On December 24, 1980, the PCP-SL organized a massive assault on the Ayzarca hacienda in Pomatambo, Vilcashuamán, where they assassinated landowner Benigno Medina and his butler as part of their campaign against "gamonalismo".
On December 24, 1980, between 200 to 300 peasants were gathered by the PCP-SL commando in the neighboring community of Pujas to assault the Ayzarca hacienda during the night. During the assault, they assassinated Benigno Medina, the hacienda owner, and his butler. This attack was part of the PCP-SL's initial strategy of attacking the 'symbols of gamonalismo' in the area. On March 26, 1982, PCP-SL militants again raided the Ayzarca estate, confronting the six policemen in charge of surveillance and assassinating Andrés Gutiérrez, the new administrator of the estate.
