The Shining Path PCP started the internal armed conflict in Peru on May 17, 1980, when electoral amphorae were burned in Chuschi, Ayacucho. This act marked the beginning of two decades of violence that devastated the country. The subversive group sought to destroy the Peruvian state in order to build a totalitarian one. The violence initiated by Sendero Luminoso was the origin of the violations that severely affected Peru.
