In 1980, the MIR-EM lost the leadership of the Defense Front of Coronel Portillo, which passed into the hands of engineer Castro Vera of the College of Engineers. This loss was temporary, as they regained control in 1981.
In 1980, the MIR-EM (Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria - El Militante) lost the leadership of the Defense Front of the province of Coronel Portillo. The engineer Castro Vera, from the College of Engineers, won the leadership of this organization. This loss represented a significant setback for the MIR-EM, which had managed to control important trade union and popular organizations in the region. However, the MIR-EM regained the leadership of the Defense Front the following year, in 1981, which allowed it to prepare the way for the popular insurrection from the farmers' own social bases.
