National Strike of May 22 and 23, 1978

A two-day national strike (May 22 and 23, 1978) demonstrated the strength of the organized neighborhood movement in Lima, turning the northern, southern and eastern zones of the capital into battlefields and consolidating the alliance between the workers' movement and the slum dwellers.

The strike of May 22 and 23, 1978 demonstrated the strength and importance of the neighborhood movement in Lima, with a much more organized participation than in the previous strike of 1977. The northern, southern and eastern zones of Lima became battlefields during these two days. This mobilization crystallized the organized participation of the slum dwellers, who had articulated their demands with the labor movement. The strike demonstrated the mobilization capacity of the popular sectors and its subsequent support was reflected in the majority backing obtained by the leftist lists in the elections for the Constituent Assembly and the subsequent municipal elections.
