Formation of the Defense Front of Coronel Portillo
In July 1977, the Committee for the Defense and Struggle of Coronel Portillo (CODEL-COP) was created, which between 1977-1978 evolved into the formation of the Defense Front of Coronel Portillo, an organization controlled mainly by MIR-EM militants that brought together union, peasant and native forces.
On July 19, 1977, the Committee for the Defense and Struggle of Coronel Portillo (CODEL-COP) was created, bringing together all the union, peasant and even native forces, including the Committee of Revolutionary Workers of Peru (CTRP). Between 1977 and 1978, with an important presence of the MIR-EM in the political life of the province, an Organizing Committee was formed to constitute the Defense Front of the province of Coronel Portillo, whose members were basically militants of the MIR-EM. In 1980, the MIR-EM lost the leadership of the Defense Front to the engineer Castro Vera of the College of Engineers, but in 1981 managed to take again the leadership of the Defense Front, which allowed to prepare the way for the popular insurrection from the farmers' own social bases.
