Appearance of the FER with the slogan Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path)

In 1973, the Revolutionary Student Front (FER) of Huamanga printed clandestine leaflets that circulated in universities in Huamanga and Lima, whose cover showed the profile of Mariátegui with the slogan "For the Shining Path of Mariátegui". This year marked the public appearance of the name that would identify the PCP-SL.

In 1973, the Revolutionary Student Front (FER) of Huamanga, a member of the José Carlos Mariátegui Regional Committee (CRJCM) led by Abimael Guzmán, printed a series of leaflets that circulated clandestinely in the universities of Huamanga and Lima. On the cover of these leaflets appeared the profile of José Carlos Mariátegui, followed by the slogan: "For the Shining Path of Mariátegui". This same year also saw the appearance of other organizations linked to the PCP-SL such as the Centro de Trabajadores Intelectuales Mariateguistas (CTIM), the Comité Femenino Popular (CFP), later renamed Movimiento Femenino Popular (MFP), and the Centro de Auto Educación Obrera (CAO), the latter in charge of disseminating in Lima the principles of class unionism among the workers of various branches of industry.
