Velasco Alvarado's military coup initiates reforms that liquidate oligarchic regime
In 1968, in the midst of a deep political crisis, a military coup took place and General Juan Velasco Alvarado assumed the presidency and promoted various social reforms between 1968 and 1975. These reforms ended up liquidating the oligarchic regime in crisis. In the case of Ayacucho, they seriously affected the local powers of the latifundistas and gamonales. In this process, the local intelligentsia formed at the University of Huamanga became more important.
