San Pedro Massacre
Massacre that resulted in the death of at least 17 peasants from Callapayoc, Ongoy, during a mobilization for the dispute over the San Pedro hacienda in 1963.
The San Pedro massacre occurred in 1963 in the context of land disputes between communities and haciendas in the province of Chincheros (then part of Andahuaylas). The villagers of Callapayoc, in Ongoy, mobilized in dispute over the San Pedro hacienda. This peasant mobilization caused the death of at least 17 peasants. The struggles for land had been going on for a long time but intensified since the middle of the 20th century, particularly during the 1960s with widespread land seizures in the Peruvian highlands.
