Attempted entry of ELN through Puerto Maldonado

At the end of 1962, an ELN advance party of six guerrillas attempted to enter Puerto Maldonado from Bolivia, clashing with the police. Most of them were captured and the poet Javier Heraud died in the confrontation.

At the end of 1962, a group of 40 militant men from the National Liberation Army (ELN), led by Héctor Béjar, tried to enter the country clandestinely through the Bolivian border to support the peasant leader Hugo Blanco in the valleys of La Convención and Lares de Cuzco. An advance group composed of six guerrillas attempted to enter Puerto Maldonado to obtain information. The group clashed with the police, resulting in the capture of most of its members and the death of the poet Javier Heraud in the confrontation.
