Creation of the Breña, Surquillo and San Martín de Porres districts.

Creation of three new districts in Lima (Breña, Surquillo and San Martín de Porres) in 1961, as a result of the subdivision of existing districts due to the pressure of urban growth in the capital.

In 1961, seven additional districts were registered in the province of Lima, four of them as a result of the creation of seaside resorts and three as a result of the subdivision of existing districts due to the pressure of urban growth. The three districts created by subdivision were Breña, Surquillo and San Martín de Porres. This process was part of the urban expansion of Metropolitan Lima, which experienced sustained growth since the mid-20th century. By 1961, Metropolitan Lima accounted for 18.3% of the country's total population with 1,901,927 inhabitants.
