In 1960, under the influence of the Cuban revolution, the FER (Frente Estudiantil Revolucionario) was founded at the San Antonio Abad del Cuzco University. The FER brought together a large number of students from Puno and obtained its first electoral victory in 1962. This student organization dominated the student federation until the end of the 1970s, displacing other political forces such as the FURI (Frente Universitario Reformista Independiente) and the FRU (Frente de Reforma Universitaria) of the Partido Aprista Peruano. The emergence of the FER took place in the context of the massification of the university, which grew from 2,351 students in 1960 to 4,312 in 1965.
