The invasion of San Pedro was one of the first land occupations that initiated the formation of shantytowns around Lima. It occurred months after the invasion of San Cosme hill in 1946, followed the next year by the invasion of El Agustino. These invasions took place despite strong state repression that would eventually turn into ambiguous tolerance. This process marked the beginning of a land occupation phenomenon that would radically transform the physiognomy of the Peruvian capital in the following decades.
