Puerto Alegre was founded on June 24, 1940 by Brazilian settlers who gathered in this hamlet. The hamlet is located in a strategic position near Lake Imiria and the Tamaya River. During the internal armed conflict, in 1991, the population of Puerto Alegre decided to form a Self-Defense Committee (CAD) that played a fundamental role in the counter-subversive struggle and in the defeat of PCP-SL in Lake Imiria and in some areas of the Tamaya River. The first president of the CAD was one of the Brazilian settlers, which demonstrates the influence of this community in the hamlet since its foundation.
