Formation of the Federation of Clubs of Mothers in Ayacucho (FEDECMA)
In 1988, the Federation Provincial de Clubes de Madres de Huamanga was established in Ayacucho, Peru, as a response to the violence and disappearances during the armed conflict. The organization, which began as clandestine meetings of women seeking their missing relatives, grew to include 270 clubs and played a significant role in advocating for peace and development. Their participation in the 1988 March for Peace marked a pivotal moment, as they openly challenged the PCP-SL and gained legitimacy and recognition in the community.
Los clubes de madres en Ayacucho comenzaron a desarrollarse a partir de 1986 como respuesta a los problemas derivados de la violencia armada. En 1988 se constituyó la Federación Provincial de Clubes de Madres de Huamanga con 270 clubes de madres participantes. En 1991 se convocó al Primer Congreso Departamental que dio origen a FEDECMA, que llegó a contar con 11 federaciones provinciales, 1400 clubes de madres y 80,000 mujeres afiliadas. Estas organizaciones se convirtieron en actoras sociales y políticas importantes, participando en la marcha por la Paz de 1988 y en procesos posteriores de reconstrucción.
