Massacre in Mazamari
On 18 August 1993, 72 people were killed in Mazamari, Peru. The massacre was attributed to the conflict involving the Peruvian military and the Shining Path insurgency. Testimonies before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission indicated that the local population was coerced into supporting the insurgents, leading to tragic consequences.
El 18 de agosto de 1993, 72 personas fueron asesinadas en Mazamari. Según testimonios presentados ante la Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación y documentos judiciales (expediente N°18-94), los perpetradores argumentaban que la población local eran colaboradores de Sendero Luminoso, ya sea por miedo o amenaza, particularmente en el cruce del Puente Cubaro donde presuntamente bajaban terroristas para recoger víveres. Las víctimas incluían hombres, mujeres y menores de edad de la zona.
