Assassination of Vice Admiral Gerónimo Cafferata Marazzi
On October 14, 1986, Vice Admiral (retired) Geronimo Cafferata Marazzi, who had served as the Commander General of the Navy until December of the previous year, was assassinated by the Shining Path (PCP-SL) in Peru. This assassination was part of a broader strategy by the Shining Path to provoke a violent reaction from the state. The group targeted high-ranking officials to destabilize the political system and legitimize their subversive actions.
Entre 1985 y 1990, el PCP-SL intensificó sus ataques contra funcionarios públicos y miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas. El 14 de octubre de 1986, cinco meses después del asesinato del Contralmirante Carlos Ponce Canessa, el PCP-SL asesinó al Vicealmirante (r) Gerónimo Cafferata Marazzi, quien había sido Comandante General de la Marina hasta diciembre de 1985.
