Castro Castro Prison Massacre
In the early hours of May 6, 1992, a violent confrontation occurred at Castro Castro Prison in Peru. The police attempted to forcibly transfer female inmates associated with the Communist Party of Peru (PCP-SL) to another facility, leading to a standoff. The situation escalated into a massacre, resulting in several deaths and injuries among the prisoners.
Entre el 6 y 9 de mayo de 1992, la Policía Nacional ingresó por sorpresa a los pabellones de terrorismo del penal de Castro Castro para retomar el control territorial y trasladar a algunos reclusos. Ante la resistencia de los detenidos, los efectivos policiales utilizaron armas de fuego, explosivos y gases lacrimógenos. El operativo resultó en 45 muertes de acusados y condenados por delito de terrorismo vinculados al PCP-Sendero Luminoso, aunque también se registraron indicios de ejecuciones arbitrarias de reclusos que se habían rendido.
