Assassination of Saúl Cantoral
In 1989, Saúl Cantoral, the president of the Federation of Miners, was assassinated in San Juan de Lurigancho by the Comando Rodrigo Franco, a paramilitary group linked to the Ministry of the Interior and the Police. The assassination was part of a broader campaign of violence against opposition leaders, which was often falsely attributed to the PCP-SL. The murder of Cantoral, along with other leaders, led to a 24-hour strike by mining unions, highlighting the tension and violence during the period.
