In May 2002, the villagers of Uchuraccay handed over to the members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission a list with the names of 135 Uchuraccaínos who died as a result of political violence between 1983 and 1984. This delivery was part of the TRC's documentation work on the victims of the internal armed conflict. The list documents the deaths that occurred after the massacre of journalists on January 26, 1983, when the community suffered reprisals from both the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and the forces of law and order and peasant patrols from neighboring communities. The CVR report emphasizes the need to incorporate the memory of these 135 dead uchuraccaínos into the national collective memory, recognizing that the community was the driving force behind the first peasant rebellion against subversion.
