Interpretation of judgment with general effects
Inter-American Court declared that the Barrios Altos judgment has general effects for all similar cases.
On September 3, 2001, the Inter-American Court issued a judgment of interpretation stating that the decision in the Barrios Altos case has general effects, applying not only to this case but to all cases of human rights violations in Peru since 1980 in which amnesty laws 26479 and 26492 were applied. This ruling established international jurisprudence on the nullity of laws that prevent the investigation of crimes against humanity.
