Judgment of the Inter-American Court on Barrios Altos

Inter-American Court declared amnesty laws incompatible with Convention; ordered to investigate Barrios Altos

On March 14, 2001, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued a judgment in the Barrios Altos case, declaring that amnesty laws 26479 and 26492 are incompatible with the American Convention on Human Rights and have no legal effect. The Peruvian State recognized its international responsibility for violation of the rights to life, personal integrity, judicial guarantees and judicial protection. The Court ordered to investigate and punish those responsible.
