Valentín Paniagua takes over the presidency

Valentín Paniagua assumed the presidency of the Republic on November 22, 2000, following the resignation of Alberto Fujimori from Asia, initiating a government of democratic transition.

Valentín Paniagua is sworn in as President of the Republic. This event took place in the context of the political crisis generated by the resignation of Alberto Fujimori, who had traveled to Asia from where he announced his resignation after allegations of electoral fraud in his 2000 reelection. Paniagua's inauguration marks the beginning of a democratic transition government after a decade marked by Fujimori's authoritarianism and the internal armed conflict.
