Confrontation in Alto Sonaveni

Armed confrontation between ronderos and Sendero Rojo militants in Alto Sonaveni, Satipo, which left two ronderos wounded by gunshot. The incident reflects the residual presence of the PCP-SL in the central jungle at the end of 1999.

On December 12, 1999, an armed confrontation took place in Alto Sonaveni, district of Satipo, province of Junin, between peasant ronderos and militants of Sendero Rojo (PCP-SL faction). During the confrontation, two ronderos were shot and wounded. This incident occurred in the context of the residual presence of the PCP-SL in the central jungle, specifically in rural areas of the Ene river basin, from where they carried out sporadic incursions. By the end of 1999, the operational capacity of the PCP-SL in the region was significantly reduced after years of military offensive and the organization of self-defense committees.
