Oscar Ramírez Duran, known as 'Feliciano', a Shining Path leader of the PCP-SL, was captured in July 1999. His capture represented a definitive blow to the PCP-SL in the central jungle, which until then had maintained a presence on the left bank of the Ene river basin, from where it sporadically raided communities in the districts of Pangoa and Río Tambo, and moved into the highlands through Andamarca and Santo Domingo de Acobamba and into the jungle of Ayacucho. After his capture, the PCP-SL finally lost this operational capacity in the region.
