On March 23, 1997, Mariela Barreto, who was a SIE source for journalistic investigations on the Colina Group and SIN operations, was found decapitated. Her murder was part of the persecution of those who collaborated with journalists in investigations on human rights violations and death squads during the Fujimori government.
