A commando of 14 MRTA members stormed the residence of Japanese Ambassador Morihisa Aoki on December 17, 1996. The hostage crisis lasted for more than four months. On April 22, 1997, the crisis ended with a military intervention that left 17 victims: Supreme Court member Carlos Giusti, two Army officers, and the 14 emerretistas who stormed the residence. This was the last major record of subversive activities in Metropolitan Lima during the period of the internal armed conflict.
