Seizure of the Japanese Ambassador's residence
On December 17, 1996, more than a dozen members of the MRTA special forces assaulted and took over the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Lima. The 14 emerretistas were killed in the retaking by State forces.
The National Directorate of the MRTA made the decision to execute a commando-type military action in the city of Lima with the objective of freeing its militants. A little more than a dozen members of the MRTA special forces, operating in the central jungle, were intensively trained for several months preparing to assault and take over the Japanese Ambassador's residence. The action was executed on December 17, 1996. The 14 emerretistas were killed in the retaking of part of the State forces.
