Takeover of the Japanese ambassador's residence

On December 17, 1996, 14 MRTA militants stormed the residence of the Japanese ambassador in Lima, capturing several dozen hostages. After several days, the forces of law and order retook the residence and all the assailants were killed.

The national leadership of the MRTA decided that a group of members of its forces in the central jungle, weakened by confrontations with the Army, would carry out a major national operation aimed at freeing its prisoners. After several months of intense preparation, on December 17, 1996, 14 MRTA militants stormed the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima and captured several dozen hostages. After several days, the residence was retaken by the forces of law and order and the assailants were killed.
