Shining Path leader 'Manco' died in confrontation with police in Puente Durand

José Hilario Picón, called 'comrade Manco', one of the most important Sendero leaders who had control in Monzón, was killed by the highway police. The Shining Path members had arrived in Puente Durand at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, gathered the population in the small evangelical church and tied up 6 people accused of being informers. Hilario Picon died in the confrontation along with 2 other hikers. After his death, the Shining Path leader Elmer Tarazona Escalante surrendered to the army.
