Clash between peasant patrols and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Santo Domingo, Conchucos, which left two hikers dead on May 14, 1996.
On May 14, 1996, there was an armed confrontation between members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and peasant patrols in the town of Santo Domingo, located in the Conchucos area. The confrontation resulted in the death of two hikers. This event occurred in the context of the decline of Shining Path activity in the region, after the capture of Abimael Guzman in 1992 and the implementation of the Self-Defense Committees. By 1996, PCP-SL activity had significantly decreased in the northern provinces.
