On January 24, 1996, in San Martin Pangoa, a district of Satipo province in Junin, there was a confrontation between peasant ronderos and PCP-Sendero Luminoso forces. During this confrontation, the PCP-SL killed three ronderos. This event occurred in the context of the final period of the cycle of violence in the central region (1994-2000), when the PCP-SL was already in the process of being defeated but still maintained operational capacity in specific rural areas, particularly on the left bank of the Ene River basin in Satipo, from where it made sporadic incursions into communities in the districts of Pangoa and Río Tambo.
