In 1995, the president of Peru inaugurated Nuevo Uchuraccay as part of the government's repopulation policy. The community was showcased as an example of this policy and was rebuilt on a new site on the hillside above the old town center. Nuevo Uchuraccay was composed of about fifty small houses next to each other, built by the Programa de Apoyo al Repoblamiento (PAR) according to an urban architectural model. The new settlement was located in a colder but safer place, adequately sheltered from the eventuality of attacks, moving away from the 'bad memories' of the old town.
