On December 25, 1994, in the town of Muyoc, province of San Marcos, department of Cajamarca, the police killed three members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This confrontation took place in the context of the decline of Shining Path violence in the region, after the capture of Abimael Guzmán in 1992 and the successive blows to the structure of the Northern Regional Committee. The event was part of the counter-subversive actions that intensified in the area between 1994 and 1995, a period in which the police and military forces were able to progressively dismantle the Shining Path presence in the northern provinces of Cajamarca.
