MRTA ambush at La Merced

On July 14, 1994, the MRTA carried out an ambush in La Merced, Chanchamayo province, Junin department. In this attack, two policemen were killed by the subversives. This event occurred in the context of the final phase of the internal armed conflict in the central jungle, when the MRTA still maintained operational capacity in the provinces of Chanchamayo and Oxapampa, although its presence was already being significantly reduced by the military offensive and the forces of law and order.
