End of second phase of Operation Aries

The second and last phase of Operation Aries, which lasted from mid-June to July 1994, was characterized by the accompaniment of repentants to the military commandos and the consolidation of control over the Cuchara and Primavera pockets.

The second phase of Operation Aries took place from mid-June to July 1994 on the left bank of the Huallaga River. Unlike the first phase, in this stage the commandos were accompanied by repentants who pointed out the location of the Shining Path committees and weapons. The armed forces again dropped leaflets about Operation Aries, giving the population settled in the combat zone the opportunity to leave. This phase sought to consolidate military control over the Cuchara and Primavera pockets, where the PCP-SL had established its last strongholds in Alto Huallaga.
